tuftears: Happy Lynx (Happy)

Per Dracosphynx, we had made reservations for this trip well ahead of time-- early in 2016, I think. So I was not thrilled when my co-workers managed to give me a cold just before the trip. Thanks, you plague rats. :P

Fortunately the symptoms appeared to be treatable with DayQuil and NyQuil, and in hope of shortening the duration of the cold, I packed along some zinc lozenges as well. Thus fortified, I shipped out Monday, meeting Dracosphynx at the airport.

Here we have dinner on the plane-- a mixed salad, beef tips and root veggies, and a brownie with strawberry and whipped cream. We flew Economy Plus, and after looking at the regular Economy seats, I think it's definitely worth a few hundred more dollars for the extra comfort and the individual screens with movies available to watch. Actual utensils and dishware made the meal feel much more substantial as well.

We both watched the Lego Batman movie, as I recall, and Arrival. I also watched some of 'Tabineko Roman', a Japanese TV show focusing on cats.

I attempted to snooze on the red-eye flight... I was unsuccessful. This would mark the first of a disconcerting number of sleepless nights.

Breakfast! An omelette with hash brown bites, a selection of fruit bits, and a roll.

We transferred in Frankfurt to a much smaller plane. It was a really disconcerting transfer; there was a shuttle to transfer us all the way to the main terminal, where we needed to pass customs and then take another shuttle to the Airbus. This plane was also dismayingly tiny, with all seats being Economy only. No luxury here! :(

Once we collected our luggage, we were met by Tauck and took the shuttle to the hotel, the Phoenicia in Malta.

We had ordered separate beds for our trip. This yielded in the first of a number of not really satisfactory beds. Dracosphynx thought they were rather overly firm; both of us agreed the beds were rather on the small side.

Tauck hosted a 'come as you are' cocktail, since many of us would be just arriving that day. (the smart people would have arrived the previous day and stayed overnight in the hotel to help overcome jet lag) These are some of the delicacies on offer.

The dining room where dinner was served in the Phoenicia. Italian architecture mandates that ceilings be focal points of art, evidently.

Ham terrine and a piece of slightly burnt toast. I found the toast puzzling. The ham was a little salty but in general I liked it.

Beef wellington! I had expected a small piece of beef wrapped in a pastry shell of its own, but it appears they roasted a whole slab of beef, presumably wrapped in aforementioned pastry, and then cut it into slices. Pretty tasty. Mashed potatoes and green beans on the side.

Dessert: some sort of lemon creme/custard, surrounded by a sugar cage. This excited a lot of interest from my fellow diners. It was pretty tasty, I only ate a little of the cage since I wasn't that interested in sugar for its own sake, but the creme was quite enjoyable.

After that, we retired to the room to try and get sleep.. Which proved to be a night of tossing and turning for me, at least. Eee. -_- Tufties need sleep to get better, darn it!
