Dickensfair 2015

Evidently it's been three years since the last Dickensfair we attended, so it was time to hit up one again.

Welcome to Victorian London, by way of San Francisco!

I saw this in one of the stores and had to have it. I encouraged the well-dressed vendors to pose with it for the picture, since it wasn't terribly busy.

It's actually a box, cleverly disguised as a book. I have no idea what, if anything, I'd ever conceal in it, but at least I have a kind-of-obvious hiding spot now.

I decided to try the ginger marmalade as a possible shortcut for cooking. While Aunt Kitty is cute (and there's no denying her name had a role in my purchase) I'm inclined to think it's still better to mince fresh ginger. I'll save the marmalade for, well, putting on an English muffin at some point when I need the zing.

The obligatory appearance of steampunk gadgets and whimsical adventurers!

Dark Garden was back with more well-dressed women posing in their windows.

A fantasy chess set in a pewter store.

They had a nice selection of flagons with dragons! Before you commence with the obvious song reference, I took this picture because of the two mugs at the center: left, a fairy, and right, two foxes, one perched on the paws of the other in order to sip at whatever was inside.

I was once again tempted by these masks. Seems they're made by Peekaboo Masks. Only thing that really stops me from splurging is that I don't know how well they'd do with glasses. Not being able to wear glasses would kind of kill it for me.

The woman kindly agreed to my request for a picture of her. How could I not ask? She looked just so perfect, you have to admire how much work people put into their costumes.

What sorts of antics go on in Mad Sal's? Evidently men dancing like lunatics.

[livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx went in for fish'n'chips for lunch-- as early as we'd arrived, we made it to the food area ahead of the lunchtime crowd. I looked around a bit and went in for this: duck l'orange, with rice pilaf and mixed veggies. It was very good!

They had a Victorian arts area; shown here is someone pretending to paint several women dressed in pre-Raphaelite style. At least I think he was pretending; the picture looked rather finished to me.

If you've been reading my blog regularly, you'll know I'm always on the lookout for fashionable ways to carry more things. This dual shoulder holsters from interested me. Most of their holsters were too frilly, but I could see something like this working well.

After that, we circled around once again so [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx could try and locate a friend he'd been hoping to meet-- no luck, alas. Then I was dragged off to...

KitTea, the cat cafe in San Francisco. There was a small collection of cat-related merchandise for sale in the front.

At the time we got there, the playroom was unoccupied except for this employee who was whiling away the time until the next influx of cafe visitors. Apparently one makes reservations by the half-hour or hour, and they were booked at the time, so I didn't get to pet any cats myself!

So I had a cup of genmaicha tea (green tea with brown rice flavor) and a lemon bar ([livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx got their last Calico Cat Treat, darn it) and did some sketches of people playing with the kitties:

While walking back to the parking lot, [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx saw this odd looking structure:

It's an art installation connected with Burning Man, evidently.

While there, [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx noted an ice cream store nearby that used liquid nitrogen to make their ice cream, so we gave it a try.

Seems like a normal ice cream maker...

Until the liquid nitrogen goes in! Then it starts steaming up pretty voluminously. It's really smooth ice cream too, the Earl Grey ice cream was pretty good stuff.

We stopped by a chocolate store nearby because [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx wanted to try their 85% cacao hot chocolate. I tried a bit:

On the way back to the parking lot from there, we noted this interesting-looking machine:

This is evidently the sort of thing you do if you have a really thin space but all the vertical headroom you could want. You build a machine that wheels clothes up and down.

The plasma ball looks a bit out of place in the steampunk gadgets display =^.^=. An actual Victorian-tech electrical device would use some kind of dynamo.

Lynx-sketches! I like your expression in the hot-chocolate one. :D

The set-pieces and costumes for the Dickensfair are great. And I find those book-boxes irresistible, too. c_c
