Skipping Further Confusion-- only a few not-especially-good pictures for that one-- the next significant event on my phone is the Cherry Blossom Festival, up in San Francisco. It's always a good time up there!

Yay for a year in which I wasn't sandbagged by an annoying and lingering cough all spring! We left my place early and trekked up to San Francisco for the Cherry Blossom Festival. It was fun!

The other week, [identity profile] dracosphynx.livejournal.com dragged me up to the San Francisco Japantown for their 50th Cherry Blossom Festival. Whee! It was fun, though at this point we both know pretty much what to expect.

[livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx had the yen to go see the Emperors' Treasures exhibit up in the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, on the last weekend of the exhibit, so we headed up there. Yay, out into the Big Bloo Room!

Is it that time of the year already? Yes, and past by two weeks-- well, better than two months of photos languishing in my phone before I get around to posting them. :)

[livejournal.com profile] kagetsume was out in the area and by happy chance, there was a Cherry Blossom festival going on in Japantown, SF, on that weekend. He was quite interested so he willingly drove me up there on that Saturday. Good for me, since I hate driving past my 'leash range', especially up in San Francisco.

Evidently it's been three years since the last Dickensfair we attended, so it was time to hit up one again.

Around this time of the year, the Cherry Blossom Festival crops up in San Francisco, and [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx shanghai'd me once again.

The Google holiday party this year was held at the California Academy of Sciences. I've actually been there recently but [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx would have wanted me to go... So I struggled to get myself out the door and onto the shuttle from the Mountain View campus.

The other while, [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx had a yen to hit up the San Francisco Zoo, so I tagged along, with the customary bribe of a donut for getting up and being ready to roll that early. ;) It's been a while so I'm going to be fuzzy about the animals we saw.

[livejournal.com profile] chipotle recently had a birthday, so in honor of the occasion, he wanted to eat at Parallel 37. With [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx driving, we headed up via BART and navigated the streets of San Francisco to the Ritz-Carlton, with a minor 'whoops' due to there being two overlapping roads-- there's a road named Stockton which runs through a tunnel, but the actual restaurant was on the road above it, which is *also* named Stockton. Thanks, San Francisco!

We ordered the 5-course tasting menu, with wine pairing for [livejournal.com profile] chipotle and [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx; I eschewed since I'm not a drinker; I'm told I missed a great deal that way since the flavor of the wines and the courses interact. I pled for 'non-scary seafood', and they were very accommodating on the subject. Seems the way a tasting menu works is the chefs cook what they want, but they can adapt the selection if people have different preferences, i.e. non-gluten, non-dairy, etc.

As you might recall from my last entry, we had just spent a few hours wandering around various exhibits in the California Academy of Sciences. Next up was the Interval, a teahouse where [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx has a bag of 25-year-old vintage Pu-erh tea held for him by the proprietors.

They had an orrery out front that has been designed with mechanical gears to compute the relative placement of the planets. Interesting, but I admit one drawback is that it moves very, very slowly so you'd have to be watching quite a while to note any movement from the gears.

Daunted by his illness last week from visiting San Francisco for the J-Pop Festival, [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx vowed to venture to SF this week for the skulls exhibit, from which he wanted a better understanding of how horns attach to skulls. For his artwork, that is, he is not planning severe reconstructive surgery. That I know of.

Naturally, I tagged along because, hey, it sounded interesting!

[livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx and I headed up to San Francisco once again for the Cherry Blossom Festival. We went last year, so this year we did things a bit differently.

Earlier this week, [livejournal.com profile] sythyry was out in San Francisco with family, so [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx and I headed up there to hobnob a bit and have food! It was at a Mexican restaurant called Sabrosa's. I sketched a quick pic of the family's avatars while we waited for food, with tortilla chips served with a trio of salsas and vegetables con mole as appetizers.

Cut for images! )The hash browns I made last week, though tasty, were a bit mushy. Reading up on the subject, I found several methods to improve the crispiness. This version works! My breakfast, let me show you it.

Intending to get out of the house this weekend, I suggested to [livejournal.com profile] boingdragon and [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx that we make a trip up to San Francisco and see the Chinese Cultural Center; I also wanted to pay a visit to Mow Lee Shing Kee which I had been informed had the best Chinese sausages. This coincided nicely with Dracosphynx's desire to get some tea at the Red Blossom tea shop, and Boingdragon agreed to head down as well, to get in some visiting time while he was out this-a-way.

Following the chocolate walking tour, we headed over to Golden Gate Park and into the Japanese tea garden! This one is going to be mostly pictures. It's really a small area but very pretty.

[livejournal.com profile] kagetsume was out here so we met up and headed down to San Francisco last Saturday! We hit up Gourmet Walks's 11 AM chocolate tour.

Nominally in getting there, I'd have opted to take BART, but since we wanted to visit the Japanese tea garden afterward, it seemed like a good idea to take Jared's rental car down, since he's much better at driving around strange locales than I. I made some quick spinach-egg scrambles for us to eat with muffins, then we scooted down to get there in time.

The tour group was about 6/8 women-- perhaps something I should have guessed in retrospect, but I was a bit surprised at the time. We began the tour with a quick introduction to chocolate, then went across the street, past an arts and craft festival (which we had perused a bit beforehand) to the Ferry Building Farmer's Market, where we began the sampling with Recchiuti. This set the tone for the rest of the tour-- we were visiting high-end chocolatiers, not chocolate-makers, and generally sampling their products, with plenty of time for buying any chocolates we desired.

As I mentioned in my previous entry, I had discovered the boots I had gotten up in San Francisco were in fact too small for me. Nervously I girded myself up to venture back north...

I managed the drive up successfully and navigated BART to Powell Street, and took the boots in to Barney's of NY, which accepted the return with, thankfully, a minimum of fuss. From there, I was reluctant to return immediately-- we're talking about an hour each way-- so I gadded about San Francisco for a bit.

There was a Levi's store so I checked in it for denim jackets or vests. Well, no really nice denim vests of the sort I'd had in mind, but they had a black denim jacket that had a few more pockets than the blue jacket I was wearing, and I'm assured that my complexion means I should prefer warm colors to cool ones like blue, so I picked that up.

[livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx had suggested a while back that we head up to see Shen Yun, "the world's premier Chinese classical music and dance performance". It seemed like a good idea at the time: it would get me out of the house and presumably into an environment with more Chinese people (and maybe even cute Chinese grrls) around. And the show would probably be artistically inspiring!

So how did it work out? )
