Cherry Blossom Festival 2019
Skipping Further Confusion-- only a few not-especially-good pictures for that one-- the next significant event on my phone is the Cherry Blossom Festival, up in San Francisco. It's always a good time up there!

This dog... So FLUFFEH. I think it's an Akita, but I could be wrong.

We saw an interesting looking dolls exhibit behind a window, so we wandered in to have a look. It was a veritable progression through Japanese history!

These were apparently examples of the tools and materials used to make the dolls.

Lunch! I think this may have been either pork tonkatsu or breaded chicken, with a sunny-side-up egg on top, and curry underneath. Yum!
We browsed up the main crafts/shops throughfare. Here are a couple interesting things:

Here's Dracosphynx looking not at all menaced by the giant black spider lurking nearby!

Nice wolf head! It's pretty realistic, not the usual "mascot style".
Then we looked into the paper store... Lots of nice origami there this year!

Sensational Chinese dragon!

A collection of animal-shaped origami!

As well as some much more technically difficult looking pieces.

Nice lion, tiger, and elephant, IMO.

These wouldn't really work well without the cute printing, but hey, I'm just here for the cats, man.

I have no idea how you make things like this. It looks like braiding of some kind, but it could be like papier mache, wet paper put on a hard clay model and then let dry.
Up in the Japanese community center, they had added a calligraphy exhibit this year:

Some of the more 'standard' calligraphy art on display.

"Cherry blossoms, cherry blossoms, have you seen the old cherry tree blossoming so breathtakingly? It's a very glorious thing. Fragrant flowers seem to sing, come and see what joy they bring."

"It's getting whiter gradually, and the part that touches the mountain in the sky is a bit brighter, and the purplish clouds are not getting thinner."
... That's just what's written under the calligraphy, I didn't make or translate this poem. It's not my fault!
And then we have the usual great paper dolls... Some new-ish items I saw this year:
