I blame
tugrik!
His sous vide cooking experiments look really good, so I figure why not give it a try? Seems like to use one though, you need a stock pot or other basin that can tolerate being heated to sous vide temperatures, and a FoodSaver or similar device to vacuum seal meat and veggies into bags. So, after doing some research, I decided to get the relatively cheap and straightforward Cusinart Vacuum Sealer, along with a stock pot from Sur la Table.
Shopping surprise #1: to assist shoppers in getting their purchases to the car, they had some strips of plastic tape that could be cut to length and peeled back on each end to reveal the sticky side, and would attach to either side of the boxes, becoming convenient handles. Nifty! They worked pretty well and peeled off without too much trouble.
I decided to cruise the rest of the street mall to see what was interesting, and spotted a place called 'The Walking Company'. "Hmm, me, let's go check that out," I thought to myself. "Maybe they'll have walking sticks or something."
Nope... It was a shoe store! But hey, I'd been meaning to look into some new shoes anyway, so I asked if they had velcro shoes. They did, but only on their website, and would I like to order it through them? A glance at the shoe sizes revealed a rather... complete selection of sizes. "Say, how do I find out what shoe size I am, anyway?"
Behold what SCIENCE has wrought!

This is a far cry from the old solid metal foot sizing things they used to keep around in shoe stores. You stand in it and it scans your feet, resulting in...

This display! The salesman asked curiously if I had high arches. Hmm. That could explain some foot cramping issues I've had over the past years. Certainly a more palatable explanation than gout or diabetes setting early, neither of which would be supported by my relatively healthy physicals.
So, long story short, I got some inserts from the Walking Company and shoes are on the way. Sous vide machine is also on order, and in a few weeks I can try my hand at making awesome looking steaks like Tugrik's!
Expensive afternoon. -_- But if new shoes and inserts solve my foot issues, that will be well worth it.

Date: 2014-02-24 03:05 am (UTC)Sous vide is fun and easy, but is definitely a cooking method for the patient chef. The ability to leave something at 'just done' temp until you get home from work to have dinner is a huge plus for us weird-hours-techies types, tho.

Date: 2014-02-24 09:18 pm (UTC)That seems like a surefire way for a brick-and-mortar store to shoot itself in the foot.
"Do you have this?"
"Yeah, on our website."
Next time the customer won't come to that store. The store won't make enough money, and will be closed.
This happens to me often; I go to Best Buy or some other store looking for a product I saw on their website, because I don't feel like paying for shipping and waiting for it to arrive. Of course, it ends up not being in stock, so I have to buy it online anyway.
Brick-and-mortar stores aren't just shooting themselves in the foot, they're doing it with a machine gun and a large drum magazine.
