tuftearsWell, it looks like I'm quite a bit behind in posting my pictures so it's time to upload a few entries!
First off the bat, we have my effort at an ersatz cup o' noodles. I don't really know if MSG is bad for you, but I err on the side of safety, and regular cup o' noodles has MSG. So...
I began with Trader Joe's Spring Onion Noodles. This didn't look that promising, to begin with...
But fortunately, I'd planned ahead. I had ham and frozen mixed veggies. Just heat those up and add them in and I'd have a tasty ramen noodle bowl!
Seems pretty legit!
Chopping the ham up and sautee'ing the mixed veggies with them took a bit of a while, but on the other paw, I had enough ham/veggies for four batches-- I set the other servings aside. Now when I want ramen, I can just heat up water and ham/veggies, add the ramen noodles, then put these in.
Also, you might recall I mentioned Bamboo Bundles in a previous LJ entry. Well, it occurred to me that there might be a way to keep their shapes, rather than winding up with an unlovely handful of rice. The short of it is, they were becoming soggy lumps because the heat had reduced the gelatinous element of the food. After heating the Bamboo Bundle, I ran it under cold water and then let it sit for five minutes before unwrapping.
Yeah... That looks more legitimate. It's still basically the same flavor (kung pao chicken and rice) but it looks better.
However, I also found out a local Chinese bakery also sells dim sum. One of the items they sell are actual zongzi:
So... Yeah. No point fussing with Bamboo Bundles, I should buy a few of these and freeze 'em. They have a higher proportion of rice to filling than I like, but on the other paw, I don't have to do the huge amount of work to make them.
