One off-site, one on-site...

My work group took us out to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, which is actually an annual sort of thing. It wasn't a bad little day trip, but I found the food a bit disappointing.

Sure enough, it's a beach! Plus there's an amusement park, if you like that sort of thing. Rides, an arcade, miniature golfing, and lots of fast food stands of all types.

Lunch wasn't that inspiring, sadly. There was a vegetarian choice, and a couple of meat choices. Above, the hotdog and the ribs, plus salads. That was about it. I guess we must have gone with an outside caterer to provide food-- which makes sense to some extent.

I was tempted to pick up a snack from the Boardwalk! I actually tweeted this image at @scalzi who proclaimed that they were bleeding. I suspect they're actually filled with cherry syrup; the other side showed chocolate syrup.

There were some interesting sights:

Laughing Sally shown above is an animatronic from back when the park opened, still in good condition.

There's a whole pirate-themed miniature golf course inside. I was tempted to give it a try but couldn't round up co-workers interested in it.

This fellow showed up, climbing the mast over the control booth. No idea if he was going up to do some work or just part of the sights and sounds.

Then there was the *on*-site: a music relax-a-thon at the campus where I worked.

No, seriously. The emphasis was on RELAX:

Yup. Sofas and such placed all over the lawn, facing toward the center music stage where performers could do their things. There were also a variety of food vendors giving away free snacks. This was definitely high quality food. Check out some of the desserts!

That's a waffle cone filled with fresh berries, and a miniature funnel cake. There were also freshly made miniature donuts, kettle corn, miniature corn tamales, and so forth. Perfectly sized for snacking on!

While I'm at it, check out one of the additions to the campus:

Yep, it's a pretty nearly life-sized chess set. You have to be pretty strong to move these pieces!
