Consolation Chinese Food

tuftearsYou won't be seeing any family Kitsmas or New Year's dinner report from me for 2015-- because I got a Kitsmas cold just in time to completely obviate family get-togethers on Christmas eve and New Year's Day. So as a consolation, after carrying out a smog check needed for my car's registration renewal, I picked up some Chinese food from Bamboo Garden which had popped up with good reviews from a local restaurant search.
Here we have a cup of hot'n'sour soup at upper right, and from right going clockwise: General's sauce chicken (extra spicy, judging from the Szechuan peppers), glutinous rice with pork steamed in bamboo (a dish I've never tried before but was well regarded in reviews), and sauteed string beans with shredded pork. And white rice, since they didn't have the option of brown.
The restaurant itself seemed to be attended with a decent number of primarily Chinese families, and the specials were advertised in Chinese, which alas I don't read, but does suggest it's a relatively authentic place. It seemed clean on the inside, despite the apparent hole-in-the-wall outside and the run-down mall in which it dwells.
The General's sauce chicken was pretty decent, not great. I didn't like the glutinous rice with pork that much; it turns out the pork is 'pork belly', and I don't like the layers of fat. I'd much rather have had pork loin or some other lean meat. The string beans were pretty decent. The hot'n'sour soup was pretty good though, and just the sort of thing I'll need to ward off future colds and sore throats.
I got about five meals out of this-- lunch plus four frozen meals, and two bottles of hot'n'sour soup (each containing one bowl-sized serving) plus the cup I had with lunch. Not too bad, price-wise.
I think it's worth coming back to this place for an actual meal, or a lunch special on the weekdays. I'd just skip the glutinous rice with pork belly next time.
