Status Report for October, 2025
Nov. 1st, 2025 04:30 pmOctober's done! Time to write about it.
I have written 20,464 words on "The Rose in Nova Paree", wrapping the book up at 185k words. Whew!
Want to get a feel for what the Rose novel will be like? Here, have a short story (9k words): The Rose and the Firebrand
I have been working on revising the cover for "Timecrossed Engineer: Back to School". I decided, after looking at it, I needed to redo Xiaoqing, the human, and after a try or two, I went with a photo-reference, which has made a world of difference in getting the face to look right.
I finished the inks on a part-cat version of Treasure Island for
elizabethmccoy.
I have been working on outlines for "whatever book I decide to write next". These are the candidates:
* Timecrossed Engineer: Shakedown Cruise. The first adventures of Xiaoqing and her friends on the good ship Finder of the Lost.
* The Rose and the Grand Cagliari Scheme. A sequel to the Rose in Nova Paree book that I just wrote.
* Alien Tastes. This will be the seventh draft I've attempted, but I have an idea for making it a self-contained book this time. My past efforts have bogged down in the realization that the first volume never succeeded in being a satisfactory story on its own.
* Bright Heroes, Dark City, featuring a VRMMO with superheroes crossing over into a near-future RL. This one isn't looking very promising at the moment, so I don't expect this to make the cut.
Assuming everything shakes out as expected, after I edit The Rose in Nova Paree, I expect to start on Alien Tastes. Note that I am not planning to do Writing Month; I've already written over 180k in words this year, I'm good, really.
I have run Starforged for my friends. We've just about wrapped up a huge arc; all that's left is to give them their just rewards for completing major quests, and a little time off before they start their next great adventure.
I have played Steamworld Heist II (good popcorn-and-soda fun tactical game), The Beekeeper's Picnic (small bite-sized adventure), and I am now playing through The Alters (strategic base building game in the vein of Frostpunk and Subnautica). Of these, I would say the Alters is the most interesting if you're looking for a new game, I really enjoy the science fiction story it's telling.
Going into November, I expect to be finishing the cover for Timecrossed Engineer: Back to School, then editing the Rose in Nova Paree. I hope to release Timecrossed Engineer for cheap, and maybe serialize some version of it for free somewhere. I'm not really in this to make money but I do want people to be able to see my writing after I've put so much time into it. 🐱
And then of course there's Thanksgiving... I don't anticipate visiting family, but I do have a Thanksgiving menu for myself to make.
