You get turned into humanoid form no matter what, but you can only turn back into feral form by activating one of the abilities that says it turns you into a cat or bear if you're not already in those forms. For instance, dash for cat, or Might of Ursoc for bear.
I had to look it up on Wowhead when I managed to get on an albatross... then couldn't go cat for the life of me. I thought for a bit I was doomed to have to moonfire it down. :)
Oh lord yes, twice I had to moonfire it/wrath it down over the lake when I was trying to get up there for the pet. Takes a long time and I ran out of mana!
