Attached for your amusement, a tracking record of a package I recently sent.
It's like they decided it was going to get there too fast so they stuck it back in and winged it around an extra time. Yeesh.

Date: 2013-12-07 02:52 pm (UTC)The trace suggests the following. The mailman attempted delivery on 29 Nov. But nobody was home to receive it. The available for pickup scan indicates the mailman put a "Sorry we missed you, the package is at the local post office for pickup" slip at the destination mailbox. The mailman put the package back in the truck. But, when the mailman got back to the local post office, instead of putting the package in the "for hold" box, he accidentally put the package in the "outgoing" box.
The trace also indicates something curious about Durham, NC. It appears the inbound sort center is Greensboro, but the outbound sort center is Raleigh. This is why the package had to take the long way to Indy to close the loop. Unlike here in Central Florida where the major post office at Orlando airport is both the inbound and outbound sort center.

Date: 2013-12-08 08:02 am (UTC)Canada to China. They sent it via the US (not entirely unexpected, just annoying).
When it was _on the truck_ in China, about to be delivered, head office called them to pull it, because of a US customs/duties/taxes flag.
I found out about it when it was back in the US (thankfully before they bounced it all the way back to me). After a bit of yelling, it eventually did make it to China.
Parcel post would have been faster. Moral of the story: Never send international-to-international shipments via FedEx.
