Intending to get out of the house this weekend, I suggested to [livejournal.com profile] boingdragon and [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx that we make a trip up to San Francisco and see the Chinese Cultural Center; I also wanted to pay a visit to Mow Lee Shing Kee which I had been informed had the best Chinese sausages. This coincided nicely with Dracosphynx's desire to get some tea at the Red Blossom tea shop, and Boingdragon agreed to head down as well, to get in some visiting time while he was out this-a-way.

We met up at Union Square Plaza and had lunch at the Burger Bar; originally I'd been thinking we could eat at the restaurant with Dracosphynx's favorite dish, Explosive Chicken, but Boingdragon doesn't have much spice tolerance. I had the American Kobe beef burger this time, and since I wanted to try tasting the actual beef, instead of disguising it with cheese and bacon, I had it mostly plain, just with the standard toppings of lettuce, tomatoes and onion, and some spinach. I was expecting to be unimpressed... But it was actually amazingly tasty! The burger was seasoned just right.

While heading up to the Cultural Center, we passed by a store, West Coast Leather, and I tried on this number:

Interestingly, this store offers custom-fitted leather. I'm a little too small for most American leather jackets. I got my measurements taken there, but I'll do a bit of shopping around before putting it in gear; the jacket is actually quite pricey.

We went down an alley and Dracosphynx pointed this out:

I suspect the majority of this was paid-for advertisement art rather than impromptu street art, but still... Yay, lolcat graffiti!

Alas, the Cultural Center was closed-- turns out that they were closed through Dec 31. Darn! We grumped and then paid a trip over to the independent City Lights bookstore, where I picked up 'Monkey: Journey to the West', and Dracosphynx and Boingdragon browsed about, but didn't settle on anything. Dracosphynx got tea, I got my sausages, and we headed back.

I'll report on whether the sausages are worth the trip to San Francisco shortly!

So how are the sausages? Pretty good actually! I couldn't assert that they are 100% better than Kam Yan Jen, but at least 20-25% better. I reheated some frozen bok choy I'd made the other week, boiled the lop chang, then sliced the lop chang into the bok choy and stirred, and had that with some leftover wild rice.
