FanimeCon 2015

Oh yeah, I guess I should give a rundown of FanimeCon, the Memorial Day con that
dracosphynx and I went to on Saturday. (Sunday was
tugrik's excellent barbecue)
Overall, it was pretty good. The con is *HUGE*. The artist's alley alone could have eaten two of Further Confusion's dealer rooms and had room for dessert. The dealer's room was bigger, but didn't seem that packed since they had wider-spaced aisles and bigger dealers' booths... Largely necessary because the dealers each had huge arrays of merchandise.
Here are a couple of examples of crafts for sale in the artists' alley:

Sushi cat plushies! And other related food plushes, I think. These were cute, but since I'm not a fan of sushi, I decided against purchasing them.

This TF2 Soldier was selling a variety of prop weapons. I didn't recognize the gun, but I suspect it's from Halo.
If you've been to any furry convention recently, you might have gotten the impression every fan has a fursuit. Well, at an anime con, every fan has a cosplay. Here are a few.

This lovely lady is what looks like a Rule 63 version of the Beast -- 'for every character, there is a gender-opposite version.' She really nails the look, IMO, with Beauty's dress and Beast's horn and makeup.

I'm not sure what anime she's from, but it's a really nice and elegant costume, IMO, that worked with her appearance very well.

Have you heard of Kancolle? It's a Japanese game where various girls find themselves able to transform themselves into 'moe' versions of World War II ships and submarines. No, I'm not making this up. It's a thing.
dracosphynx was quick to notice this one. She's a Yamato-based kancolle, if I read it right, and poses here with her captain. I was really impressed her costume included the heavy armor bits that are intended to represent the Kancolle 'ships'. That can't be easy to move around in.

I'm not sure what these characters are, but I'm guessing they're also Kancolle based, just less ambitious about bringing out the full props, since I didn't see the heavy armored bits. Still, it was a good opportunity to get a group picture.

Again,
dracosphynx was first to notice these characters: Shiroe and Naotsugu from Log Horizon, one of our favorite anime series. (Dracosphynx also expressed bemusement that I was so cavalier about going up to people and asking them for permission to take a picture, considering my normal shy nature. I pointed out that by appearing in cosplay, and not obviously busy doing something else, they had already taken the first step in the social ritual. Though I hasten to point out, I'm well aware that yes, one should still ask permission to take a picture.)

This is one of the bigger costumes I saw. Actually, there's a helmet, I just didn't notice that at the time that I took the picture. I was impressed, it's a really solid and good looking robot.

We didn't even consider trying to visit the maid cafe; with the vast number of people around... there was even a longish line to get into the dealers' room at several occasions... it would have been on order of several hours to get into the cafe. For that matter, we were unable to get into a panel on storyboarding that
dracosphynx had wanted to attend, which also sported a stupidly long line to get in, half an hour before the actual panel.
On the other paw, I at least managed to snap this picture of the 'Stage Zero' show that the Fanime Maid Cafe was putting on. Yay, cute maid cosplay!

And because no entree is complete without trying to inspire my readers into seeking out tasty food, here, have a picture of the 'Farmhouse Burger' from Gordon Biersch, topped with an egg easy over. It was pretty tasty! I ordered sautee'd veggies on the side instead of fries, which worked pretty well.
On the other paw, I must advise against Bijan Bakery in San Jose; while their food is pretty good, the wait is super long. It just feels like the service is very slow and doesn't make up for it with quality. Especially when there's a con going on... Egads. -_-
Anyway, it was a pretty good anime con! I would have liked to check out BayCon as well, going on in the same weekend, but Sunday was taken up by the BBQ, and BayCon wasn't running through Memorial Day Monday. Ah well.

Date: 2015-06-08 06:25 am (UTC)Someday I'll be brave enough to attend an anime con. They look pretty fun. Especially the cosplayers.

Date: 2015-06-10 01:39 am (UTC)I agree that it's probably not especially heavy, compared to fursuits, but the distribution of weight/encumbrance would be very different. Just imagine wearing dual sets of wings, one at the shoulders and one at the waist/hips.

Date: 2015-06-10 02:29 am (UTC)Re. the costume, I'm imagining that it weighs about as much as styrofoam. Wind resistance from walking would imbalance you more than the weight would, under those conditions =^.^=.
That said, you got a closer look than I did. It's entirely possible that it's made from heavier materials. That's supported by the fact that all four appendages are cantilevered forwards, so that its centre of mass is pretty much where hers is.
