[livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx has been jonesing for a Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki ever since his trip to Japan. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of options for something so... specific. However, he did hear about this one restaurant nearby that serves it.

We started off with the 'chicken karaage buns' since it would take a while for the okonomiyakis to be made. They were pretty good! Sort of like fried chicken sliders. I thought they might have tasted better with a hoisin sauce instead of the mayo sauce they did have.

Here's the okonomiyaki itself! It seems basically like fried chow mein noodles with eggy pancake batter cooked crisp on the top and bottom, but it has a fried egg layer and a bacon layer. (bacon was a requested topping on my part) Plus some random stuff on top. I requested mine 'half and half', so there's half traditional okonomiyaki sauce, and half of some kind of lemon drizzle. I liked the lemon drizzle side better, I think; the okonomiyaki sauce actually makes it a little too rich.

Pictured on the side is the 'iced ginger green tea' I ordered. It's pretty heavy on the ginger, but that's to the good, right?

Random doodle. [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx as a chibi-form taiko drummer.

Anyway, I promised you a Google food truck too, didn't I?

Here's a Korean-style burrito foodtruck. I didn't try the food, but I had to take a picture of the side art.

Here's a closeup of the side art! You wouldn't see this while the foodtruck was open for business, so good timing on my part, says I.

Hee! Adorable food truck art! And I love the Dracosphynx sketch. :)

Huh. That okonomiyaki looks very different from the okonomiyaki at our local Japanese restaurant (that is, the only local Japanese restaurant we know of that actually has okonomiyaki on the menu). Maybe I should take pictures. The kind at Bikkuri Sushi has these potato (?) threads that are in a loose weave, forming a sort of grid that the other elements (meats, cilantro, scallions, onion strips, etc.) are woven into. Ack. Now I'm getting hungry for it. Maybe I can persuade Gwendel that we really ought to go out there again this week. :)

That's the 'Osaka' version of the okonomiyaki, I think. The Hiroshima version is layered, the Osaka/Kansai version is woven and cooked together all at once.

The Hiroshima version really wasn't very authentic, versus the version that [livejournal.com profile] dracosphynx linked me on video. This isn't the video, but the pictures are a good documentation of the difference:

That would seem to jive with some of the stuff Gwendel was telling me about the food there, that there were several Osaka/Kansai Region dishes that we just CANNOT FIND at other Japanese restaurants. (I can't think of any particular examples that she identified at the moment, alas, other than the okonomiyaki and the takoyaki.)
