[livejournal.com profile] kagetsume was in the area. I took him on a tour of Google Monday, but he was free Wednesday as well, so I asked [livejournal.com profile] chipotle for some recommendations. We settled on Rio Adobe. It looked like a pretty barebone hole in the wall sort of place, but maybe the food would belie the looks...

The poblano pepper quesadilla was wonderful! The tortilla had asiago cheese crusted into it. We ordered it with chicken. Had we known how much was going to be served, we could have had just that for dinner for the both of us!

These are the carnada adoblada (?) enchiladas I had-- they're filled with tasty pork. They're served New Mexican style (I requested as such) with a fried egg on top. A fried egg on top of Mexican food, you ask? Oddly it actually works really well, the egg mellows out the spicy red enchilada sauce quite nicely.

For dessert, we attempted to find a Cold Stone Creamery... Our GPSes came up with a close-by one... that had closed some years ago. Whoops. We eventually found our way to the one in the nearby mall. Yum, strawberry icecream folded with strawberries and blueberries. ^_^

Those quesadillas are *exactly* the sort of thing I _really_ wish I could still eat IRL =@.@=. Even with the pills, there's a cheese event horizon beyond which I dare not cross. No matter how delicious it looks.

Ouch! It's hard to substitute for cheese, though I hear tofu can stand in for ricotta cheese and nutritional yeast has a cheese-like flavor.

Lactose-free cheese exists (I buy it often), but at best it tastes like mozzarella. At worst, it's in "I Can't Believe It's Not Plastic" territory. I used to enjoy swiss, and had asiago on occasion (though I found it best in moderation). All of that is unfortunately now in "eat pills like candy" territory.

Making lactose-free cheese is easy enough (just add the enzyme to the milk beforehand and wait a while), but demand is apparently low enough that almost nobody _does_ this.

I'll spare you the rant about other foods (I think you've already heard it). Suffice it to say that having to read labels all of the time gives me all-new sympathy for people who have genuinely deadly food reactions (mine is only unpleasant).

*nods wisely* *pats poor Deucekitteh* That is a shame! I have managed to avoid food allergies that I know about, but one could always crop up later in life.
