Presently there's this big swathe of space between the sofa and the TV. I'm thinking of a rug to fill the space in. What do you think?

Here's the living room.

This is the rug I'm thinking of.

There are some other nice rugs on this website as well.

For the library, I'm thinking of this one. [livejournal.com profile] kagetsume suggests that red and gold carpets, what I would have picked to start with, would make both rooms too red.

Put down a yoga mat and start doing yoga. A lot of space is great!

That probably would make the room too red. Maybe contrast with green and gold? I don't think it would make it too holiday-ish ;-)

Dark blue, cream, gold, black. No red, and no green (unless it's a turquoise-y) color.

Plush cream in the livinng room is what comes to mind to me. (I could never have plush or cream, given my pets, but your situation may be different!)

I look at the library and think 'footstools' rather than carpet.

Gold would be nice in either space. Agree that red is too much, and I would lean towards lighter/brighter because you have a lot of dark/heavy things going on.

But thank you for not choosing coffee tables. My shins hate those things.

I'll second the suggestion of "black and gold". I'd avoid anything with too much light-coloured space; a rug should be an accent, not foreground, and that much light colour will draw the eye too much.

I see what people are saying regarding "too red"... but that assumes you want a balanced room. You _could_ go with a red carpet, if you also added red trim or similar near the ceiling (like the frilly stuff at the top of your curtains). Right now, the beige walls give enough contrast that you really notice the red, but if the contrast is removed, it becomes background.

Probably less effort to pick a non-red carpet, though =^.^=.
